    Organised by Boyne Valley Flavours and Samhain Festival Committee, aptly continuing the theme of Transition;  the aim of ‘SAMHAIN SCHOOLS, TY COOKS OF THE YEAR 2022’ Competition is to create an engaging and exciting opportunity for Transition Year students in the Louth/Meath areas to connect with; the heritage, produce and producers of the Boyne Valley Region, whilst educating and informing these young people, the importance of appreciating and supporting their local food and drink industry.

    Food Champion for the Boyne Valley , Olivia Duff, says “we are thrilled to be sponsored by SuperValu and The Food Academy, “who have assisted many of our member producers of Boyne Valley Flavours get their products onto their shelves through their ‘Food Academy Programme. SuperValu continue to recognise the worth of introducing and cultivating young people to carefully consider their options when it comes to the provenance of food & drink.


    This competition is an innovative challenge to create a two-course meal (starter and main course OR main course and dessert) which heroes at least 2 local ingredients in each dish from the producers within the Boyne Valley Flavours Producer Network (See www.boynevalleyflavours.ie )

    Entrants, after the initial submission, will be whittled down to 8 schools (teams of 2 per school), for a final cook off which will take place in The Bunnery Cookery School, Eureka House, Kells, Co Meath, on Friday 04th November as part of the Samhain Festival Weekend.  No pressure cookers, but the judges on the day will be award winning & Michelin Bib Gourmand Chef, Jess Murphy of Kai Restaurant in Galway, local stalwart in the appreciation & passion for local food & drink Pauric White of Cavan Institute of Technology & Tutor on Chef Apprenticeship Programme and Euro-Toques Ireland Young Chef of the Year & Michelin Bib Gourmand Chef, Conor Halpenny of The Square Restaurant Dundalk. 

    Prizes include Cash for the Winners & Vouchers for Cookery Equipment for the Winners school.     

    Chairperson of Boyne Valley Flavours & MD of Listoke Distillery, Bronagh Conlon is excited by this competition;  “with 34 Secondary Schools across both counties of Louth & Meath, we expect a strong level of interest in this competition as it offers the perfect opportunity for these students to develop their skills and ignite their interest in the area of food & drink, as part of their Transition Year programme”.
