We never have a dull weekend in the Boyne Valley Food Series and last weekend was definitely no exception!
On Friday 4th and Saturday 5th we joined The Central in Navan for their amazing Oktoberfest Celebrations. The celebrations took place in their fantastic Garden Terrace, which was all decked out to give it that authentic German feel with flags and servers in Oktoberfest costumes! As well as a great atmosphere visitors of course got to try lots of different beers including a few local ones from Boyne Valley Brewhouse and sampled some German style food. This event has been taking place in The Central for the past few years and every year it continues to get bigger and better. Thank you to all the team at The Central for putting on such a fantastic show.
Saturday saw us in Kilmessan Co.Meath at the beautiful Cooney Family Orchards for their Taste the Island Apple Harvest Walk. A great welcome was given to all visitors by Marie and Sally Anne Cooney along with an absolutely delicious cup of warm cider made by Marie herself using Cooney’s Irish Cider of course! Also there at the event was Boyne Valley Flavour’s member Paddy from BeeWise sharing his extensive knowledge on beekeeping and honey production and local beekeeper Trish who makes fabulous products using honey.
Despite damp conditions Marie gave fascinating talks on the history of these family orchards, the different varieties of apples, her honeybees and how the harvest happened. Through a walk in the extensive orchards visitors learned all about minding the apple trees and saw a demonstration of how they are harvested by the orchard manager Kazik. Marie’s passion for her orchards and bee keeping was evident to all visitors and really made it an unforgettable experience.
A huge thank you and well done to all the team at Cooney’s Family Orchards for a lovely and informative day and for raising over €500 for Breast Cancer Research.
